Wood ID: Oak Natural Burl - 1008B
Size: 4 " H x 10" W (at widest point)
Description: This interesting piece of oak is from the burl that forms many many years after a branch is removed from a tree. As so often happens in this situation, the bottom, center of the burl is mostly eaten away and would not be good for holding liquids ;~). The grain patterns and textures of this piece are very interesting and the feel of holding the burl with it's entirely natural edges is quite pleasing to wood lovers. For those living in Eugene, Oregon, this is the old red oak that was blown down this winter crushing the border fence at the Morris Ranch dog park. Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Redwood Driftwood 27B
Size: 2 1/2"H x 8 1/2" W
Description: This beautiful bowl was cut from a grey piece of driftwood found on the Oregon Coast in August '06. I made three pieces from the one larger piece of driftwood and they would make a beautiful set (see above and below). Normally any conifer, even redwood, is not a good wood for turning since they tend to be mushy and don't finish well. However, with the obviously long duration this wood floated in the salty sea, the wood became hard and stable, and the grain is very beautiful. This is the largest of the three pieces, and has much of the original look of driftwood on the large outer voids (one is partially shown at the lower right) and bottom. Left very thick in the base and lower sides. Finished with natural oil.
