Wood ID: Laminated Inlay Boxes - Set 1010S
Size: 5" W x 4 1/4" H (average - at widest points)
Description: This set of custom ordered "boxes" were made from (from the bottom up) red cedar, black walnut, maple, walnut, maple. The inlays of the horse and dolphin are black walnut and the humming bird is red cedar. The inlays were carefully chosen so tiny knots make up the animal's eyes, and the grain "flows" with the natural look of the animal. These were all turned from rescued and then kiln dried woods. The order was custom requested. The price reflects the labor intensity of the order with discount applied for a "set".
Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Heritage Maple "Candy" Bowl 1002B -SOLD
Size: 10 1/2" W x 4 1/4" H (average - at widest points)

Wood ID: Heritage Maple "Salad" Bowl 1005B
Size: 10" W x 4 1/2" H (average - at widest points)
Description: Both of these bowls (Candy and Salad) were made from the same Heritage Maple tree as those above. Note first of all the much darker brownish color of these two bowls compared to the lighter more common maple color of the previous corky and suspension bowls. The main reason is these bowls were both made from two halves of the same log which had died many many many years before the tree itself finally died... and therefore these pieces had dried for many years while still part of the larger tree, and had almost no remaining bark to protect the wood from the sun and environment. Although I refer to one as a "salad" bowl, mainly due to it's shape, I'm reluctant to suggest using it for that function since it does contain significant natural spalting (those beautiful dark markings). There is also a very small patch of the original cambrium (sub bark) layer on the outside of the "salad" bowl. Both of these bowls are beautiful to the look and touch, and are wonderful keepsakes from that splendid old tree. Both are finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: River Birch Burl - Candle Holder -165V
Size: 5"H x 3 3/4"W
Description: This small yet stunning candle holder was made from a tight outer burl on the River Birch tree and therefore has natural bark remaining on both sides. The grain is varied in color and texture. The true color is slightly more brown, and less "warm", then appears in the photo. The base is completely solid as only the upper portion was hollowed to hold a candle. Some edge checking is occurring as it dries, and the wood has been finished only with natural oil. Despite it's small size, this is truly and beautiful, one of a kind piece. Keep it well oiled and the wax should come off quite easily should you have any dripping (note the upper lip has a slight cove cut to catch wayward wax, and the lip is also undercut slightly on the outside.

Wood ID: Oak "nail" Bowl - 599B
Size: 6 1/2"H x 8 1/2" W
Description: This unusual turning has such beautiful grain pattern transitions between the darker heartwood of the oak, and it's lighter sapwood, that I couldn't resist completing the piece despite having nearly destroyed both a chainsaw chain, and a bandsaw blade on two hidden nails, about 40 years into the wood. The nails left a dark blue stain, quite sizeable, on the side not shown in the photo (accounts for the reduced price for a piece of this size). This very attractive piece, is heavy-turned with only the top section hollowed (thick walls) and the base left solid... like those special coffee cups you take in your car, this piece will NOT be knocked over. Great for holding candy or working out your arm muscles. Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Spalted Ash 304B
Size: 7"H x 8 1/2"W
Description: This heavy Spalted Ash vase is a prime example of Ash grain, texture, and natural spalting at it's best. This was certainly the most beautiful piece of wood from the entire tree. The "mountain range" of spalting shown clearly in the photo continues around most of the piece, and various other grain patterns and textures make this a one-of-a-kind centerpiece. The piece is cut very heavy in the rims and base, and was finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Spalted Maple Burl Candle Holder - 531B
Size: 3" H x 5 1/2"W
Description: This beautiful little maple burl retains its original outer surface less the bark - in the area shown at left. In addition to the interesting grain and textures, the burl has some nice clean lines of spalting for added interest. Although I didn't intend to make a candle holder from this burl, it just sort of turned out that way since I refused to cut away much of the inner wood... leaving a very thick almost donut shape when viewed from above.... of course if I had cut away the inner-bowl, then we would have lost the beautiful outer burl surface shown in the photo. Candle not included (unless of course you really want it ! ). Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: River Birch - 556V
Size: 5 1/2" H x 5 1/2"W
Description: Oregon River Birch is my favorite wood ! I just love the look and feel of the grain, and the amazing brown, orange, and reddish tones that jump out of the wood when the oil finish is applied. This piece is no exception, and even has a tiny bit of spalting along one of the corky portions... speaking of which, the entire bottom is corky along with a small portion of the upper lip, clearly visible on the inside as shown above, as is the black spalting that surrounds it. The piece is turned fairly thick for it's size, though is exceptionally light. All-in-all, an exceptional piece, waiting to be handled. Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Spalted Maple Crotch 336V
Size: 7 1/2"H x 7" W
Description: The photo of this vase does not begin to do it justice. Taken from the crotch of a very old Maple, some of the grain patterns are reminiscent of the clouds of Jupiter, while others are outlined by sharp spalting. As it dries, this piece is warping into an elegant centerpiece. The piece is not as "warm" and slightly more yellowish (maple) than shown in the photo. Cut heavy in the base, and somewhat thinner in the walls and rim, the piece was finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Apple Floor Vase - 569V
Size: 25 3/4" H x 5 1/2"W
Description: This beautiful piece of apple wood is totally solid and hollowed only slightly at the very top for holding a tall candle and capturing it's drippings - or as just a display piece on it's own. Therefore, due to being solid, and despite it's height and dimensions it sits quite stable on the ground... we have a similar one permanently displayed on our brick fireplace mantel which sits about 14" off the ground - and it makes a stunning display. The beautiful dark grain patterns (as dominates the photo) is the heartwood of the apple tree, and is only on one side of the piece... the other side being pure sapwood, and almost a solid very light brown. There is checking all over the piece, especially about the upper lip, and this will continue as it dries and stabilizes to it's permanent environment (your home?)... which may take several years due to it's thickness. Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Apple-Lady Floor Vase - 567V
Size: 24 1/4" H x 5 1/2"W
Description: This elegant piece of apple wood is totally solid and hollowed only slightly at the very top for holding a tall candle and capturing it's drippings - or as just a display piece on it's own. Therefore, due to being solid, and despite it's height and dimensions it sits quite stable on the ground. The beautiful dark grain patterns (as shown in the photo) is the heartwood of the apple tree, and is only on the one side of the piece... the other side being pure sapwood, and almost a solid very light brown, though some nice grain patterns are evident. There is surprisingly little checking compared to other pieces of similar wood, turned at the same time, and this may change as it dries and stabilizes to it's permanent environment (your home?)... which may take several years due to it's thickness. Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Spalted Maple Floor Vase 553V
Size: 21 1/2" H x 5"W
Description: This maple floor vase is mostly solid and hollowed only about 1/3 down for holding reeds or perhaps a tall candle. It retains a small amount of outer bark, including a woodpecker hole. The spalting is obvious at the top and almost seems to "melt" down the sides. Due to it's solid cut, the piece may take several years to dry completely, and therefore will most likely change in character with time. Finished in natural oil.

Wood ID: Oak Table Vase - 594V
Size: 14 1/4" H x 5 1/4"W
Description: This stunning oak tabletop vase is mostly solid and hollowed only about 1/3 down for holding reeds or perhaps a tall candle. It has wonderfully textured grain with some minor checking all about, especially on the upper lip. The darker heartwood forms a beautiful contrast with the lighter sapwood, and the tiny pieces of inner bark which remain (the two small, dark "circles" which are at the right-center, low in the picture) add to the look and textures of this piece. This would make a very nice accent piece on a raised surface, especially if you're looking for a truly natural looking piece of oak. Due to it's solid cut, the piece may take several years to dry completely, and therefore will most likely change in character with time. Finished in natural oil.
